New research from the British Antarctic Survey reveals that snowfall across Antarctica has increased by 10% over the past two centuries, a shift that may actually hasten global sea level rise rather than mitigate it. The finding, based on analysis of 79 ice cores, adds a critical piece to the puzzle of how the continent responds to a warming climate.
The study, which examined layers of compacted snow and ice from around the continent, found that annual average snowfall in the early 21st century was 10% higher than during the same period in the 19th century. That translates to an additional 272 gigatonnes — or 544 trillion pounds — of snow, roughly double the volume of the Dead Sea.
At first glance, more snow might seem like a buffer against sea level rise, as it locks water away in frozen form. However, the researchers warn that the added weight compresses the ice sheet, accelerating the flow of ice from Antarctica's landmass into the ocean. This dynamic suggests that the continent's role in sea level rise could be amplified, not reduced, by increased snowfall.
Why More Snow Means Faster Ice Loss
The relationship between snowfall and ice flow is complex. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, which drives increased precipitation in polar regions — an expected consequence of climate change. But the new study indicates that the extra snow exerts pressure on the ice, causing it to move more quickly toward the coast and eventually into the sea.
This process is distinct from the melting of sea ice in the Arctic, which does not raise sea levels because it already floats. Antarctica's ice rests on land, so when it enters the ocean, it adds volume to the world's oceans, much like dropping ice cubes into a full glass.
The study's lead author, Liz Thomas, emphasized the complexity of interpreting current changes. “It is complex and challenging for scientists to fully understand and interpret changes in the ice that we see happening today,” she said in a press release. “We know that the two major influencers affecting change – the mass gain (from snowfall) and the mass loss (from melt) – are acting differently from one another. Our new findings take us a step towards improving our knowledge and understanding.”
The findings highlight the delicate balance between processes that add ice to Antarctica and those that remove it. While the continent has seen increased snowfall in recent decades, it has also experienced significant ice loss due to warming ocean waters and atmospheric temperatures. The new data will help refine models that project future sea level rise, a key factor for coastal communities worldwide.
As scientists continue to monitor Antarctica's ice sheet, this study underscores the importance of understanding the interconnected effects of climate change.
