A sweeping review of scientific literature has strengthened the link between human-caused climate change and the growing threat of wildfires worldwide. Researchers at the University of East Anglia in the UK examined 57 peer-reviewed papers and concluded that rising temperatures are already driving an increase in the frequency and severity of fire weather—conditions that make blazes more likely to ignite and spread.
The analysis arrives as Australia confronts one of the most destructive wildfire seasons in its recorded history. More than 10 million hectares have burned, and experts say the scale of the fires is so vast that it could alter ecosystems and atmospheric conditions far beyond the continent.
Lead author Matthew Jones, a senior research associate at the University of East Anglia, said the evidence is clear: “Overall, the 57 papers reviewed clearly show human-induced warming has already led to a global increase in the frequency and severity of fire weather, increasing the risks of wildfire.”
Heat and Drought as Catalysts
The review points to frequent heatwaves and prolonged droughts as key drivers behind the worsening wildfire outlook. These conditions, intensified by warming, dry out vegetation and create a tinderbox environment that can turn a small spark into a massive inferno.
Projections cited in the research suggest that a 2-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures could extend Australia’s fire season by up to 30 days. However, the study’s authors stress that meeting current climate targets could blunt that impact.
“Limiting global warming to well below 2 C would help avoid further increases in the risk of extreme fire weather,” said co-author Richard Betts, a climate scientist at the University of Exeter, in a statement.

While the immediate focus is on Australia, the findings carry worldwide significance. The fires there have already released massive amounts of smoke and carbon dioxide, and scientists are studying how the fallout might influence weather patterns and air quality across the globe.
